Report on the 2013 Ballyhoura Series by Tom Blackburn

It was fantastic to run in Doneraile on the first night back in late May with 459 runners and joggers. It was so well run and a credit to the organising club Mallow AC on the night, the beautiful weather didn’t hurt either.

This was a hard event to follow with only one race in June, the Angelsborough 10k...a brand new race on the calendar. This event was also very well run and the organisers were very professnal in the way they ran
their event, it was a pity it wasn’t better supported. This is where club races seem to do better.

The town of Millstreet in NW Cork and the Willie Neenan 10k was our next event. This also was so well run and for a first time event, it was very well supported. Great credit due to the organisers Millstreet AC.

The next event was Dromcollogher 4 mile in West Limerick. This is a race with a long history and is run in conjunction with the local festival. This was also a beautiful evening...almost too hot to run, a problem we usually don’t have in Ireland.

Back to Cork next one for the Kilworth 5mile road race. The temperatures also soared here and this two circuit course of Kilworth hill was very exposed with not a tree for shade in sight. With another race in Cork the night before, numbers were down a little on last year.

Staying in Cork, the Donoughmore 7 was next up. This was a very well established event with juvenile races and the like going on at the same time. This event has to be so well managed or it could be such a nightmare otherwise. The evening was roasting here also, the following day was the hottest day of the summer.

The last race in July was at the other side of the border in Limerick with the 7k in Kilteely, with a change of route from last year to a new venue. The committee thought they might lose a few with two unlicenced events on the same night so it was great to get the crowd that they did.

August was as busy as July with runs every Friday, the Kilmeedy festival 5 mile was next up. This was another well organised event, which didn’t get a great amount of runners but this is where local running clubs could perhaps attract a better field.

The Galtee runners GR8KM was the next run. Now these guys were very professional and all hands on deck all season long handing out fliers at every race. I was surprised this race didn’t break the 300 mark as it is an event on the rise.

Barely a week later we were back in Pallasgreen, Co.Limerick for a 10k. I thought this was a lovely course butI suppose when you run well on the night it is always a lovely course. The crowd was small enough here also, for such an easy place to find and so close to Limerick City!

The following Saturday night, the Galbally 5 mile race was run. This race in contrast to all the rest had torrential rain from the moment the run started. With the Gathering weekend on, mass in the Church, a Concert in the Community centre, and a race on there were people and cars everywhere, with the light fading and heavy rain as the evening darkened, we were happy with the numbers for a first running of the event.

The last run in the Limerick series in Emly was the 13k. This was a bold decision and even with the early start the light was fading fast but luckily with the aid of a great committee and pretty quite roads everything went off well. The numbers were small but this is a unique distance over a great course.

There were only two races left in Cork and Doneraile park was the venue for another 5k event with the Steeple 5k. It was a beautiful Saturday morning in Doneraile although the numbers were much smaller than the first race, the morning was lovely and the views, were fabulous.

The last run of the series was the Charleville International Half marathon on the Sunday morning with record numbers turning out to run the flattest half Marathon in Ireland. This was a fitting race to the end of the Series, so well organised and run on another beautiful sunny day.

This year’s series wasn’t perfect by any means. It is still a work in progress as road race series go and we will improve the series in 2014. The numbers in the Limerick side of the series were low, and this could be down to the fact that a lot of them were first time events. Another point to remember here is that some of these races were run as community events, and didn’t have clubs involved. I believe this could boost numbers, in the years ahead, clubs will need to get involved with existing races or promote new events. The length of the series I think is also an issue, rather than separate county series, maybe two series, one run in early summer on consecutive weeks, and another series a couple of weeks later with the same theme.

The emergence of unlicenced races is also playing havoc with our races, It is very hard to travel ten or fifteen miles to a race if a local community has an event on next door to you. We all want to support local, everyone wants to make the few euro. But for your own sake make sure the race is insured, as a runner AAI will not cover you if the race is not permitted. As a race organiser if your race is not insured,”YOU” the organiser are liable for any injuries.

The Ballyhoura series is well and truly over for 2013, I would like to thank everyone on behalf of Ballyhoura Active and myself, to everyone who took part in our series over the summer. It was a long series, from the 31st of May to the 22nd of September. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the clubs and community groups who ran races this year. It was a pleasure to work with you during the year, and I hope to be working with you in the new year. Also a big thank you to John Desmond for all his work over the year. His professionalism and for his very interesting blog which added that something special to the series.

Dungarvan 10 entries now closed

Entries to the 2014 Dungarvan 10 mile road race have now closed with the 2,000 available places being filled in just under 6 weeks. The only entries left are for elite athletes....(elite entries will be taken by post only after the closing date up to January 17th. The following times apply to elite entry: Men sub 55 minutes. Ladies sub 60 minutes. These times will have to be in the 3 years prior to race day. (Proof of these times may be required).

Just to show the growth in numbers and entries for this race, it's worth having a look at the last two years.

For the Dungarvan 10 race in January 2012, there was an entry limit of 1,500 places. Entries opened on 28th of October and closed on the 28th of December...i.e. two months or just under 9 weeks....an entry rate of about 160 per week.

For the Dungarvan 10 race in January 2013, the entry limit had increased to 1,750 places. Entries opened earlier on the 1st of October 2012 and closed on the 3rd of December....i.e. About the same length of time but with an extra 250 places filled....an entry rate of about 190 per week.

This time, there has been a major change in the level of demand. The entries for the 2014 race opened on the 1st of October with a limit of 2,000 places. All entries went in about five and a half weeks which is roughly a demand of about 360 per week, about double what it was in previous years.

It wasn't that long ago that the organising club West Waterford AC were taking entries to the race on the day and were hoping to grow the event to 1,000 entries. How things have changed.

Event notice...John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race - Sun 26th Jan 2014

Now as we head towards the end of 2013, it's time to look ahead to the Spring of 2014 and what lies ahead. This is the traditional season for 10 mile road races in Munster and the four big ones are Ballycotton, Dungarvan, Mallow and Cobh.

The first one up is the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race on Sunday the 26th of January 2014. This is for me one of the best road races in Munster and it attracts runners from all over the country. Please note there is an entry limit of 2,000 this year and it will almost certainly close well before race day. The entry fee is €20 and that includes a Nike dry-fit running top. It really is an excellent top and as good as you'd get in any race. The entries are flying in already so enter asap

Here is some details from the organising club West Waterford AC...

At a photo launch recently in the towns Walton Park, John Treacy along with race sponsors and club committee members, details were announced of the 23rd Annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 Mile Road Race.

The event now in its 23rd year has established itself as a must run race on the Irish road running calendar with participants from all four corners of the country and beyond participating. The race has grown year on year and is a pre-entry race only with the close date January 13th for the January 26th 2014 race or when 2,000 entries is reached .Please note that race entries closed in a matter weeks last year leaving hundreds disappointed on not being able to participate.( please get your entry in immediately )

To stage such a big event of course requires good sponsors and we are fortunate to have the support of the local authorities, Go Dungarvan, GlaxoSmithKline, Dungarvan Shopping Centre, Glanbia, Optimum Nutrition, Tipperary Water, Flahavan’s, Nike Ireland along with many other local businesses and individuals who are all giving valuable support helping to make the day a great occasion for the town of Dungarvan.

Introduced to the event three years ago the John Treacy Club Challenge Cup for men’s and ladies teams is proving to be highly successful. We will again be calling on all the athletic clubs of Ireland to take on the challenge in the 2014 event.

The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 bring’s together the ideal race combination of fun runners, joggers, club athletes and top class internationals who compete over a fast flat 10 mile course around the historic town of Dungarvan as we all look forward to an even bigger and better event on January 26th  next.

Waterford...Results of the Open Cross Country - Sun 6th Oct 2013

21ST  ANNUAL WEST WATERFORD AC OPEN CROSS COUNTRY EVENT FOR THE JAMES HUGHES PERPETUAL CUP.
Donal Power presents the Ladies the winner Dympna Ryan Dundrum AC with her prize at the 21st Annual West Waterford athletic club open cross country race held last Sunday, 6th Oct 2013. Also shown is the mens winner Tim O'Donoghue of East Cork AC receiving the James Hughes perpetual cup

Report from West Waterford AC...21 years of cross country running was celebrated in style by our club last Sunday at the 21st Annual event held at St Augustine’s college the home of cross country running in these parts. Celebrating the 21st year of any event is a special occasion and to mark the day our club was delighted to accept a beautiful new perpetual cup donated to the race by Donal Power and the Power family of Abbeyside in honour of their grandfather James. West Waterford AC are honoured and privileged to have this beautiful trophy honouring such an outstanding athlete from another era and it’s a delightful tribute by the Power family to see fit in honouring their grandfather James Hughes who through the war years was a noted Irish international cross country runner who represented his county near and far during the very troubled times of the war. Our wish for the years going forward are that many a great battle will ensue on the battle fields of our cross country race when great athletes will make claim to have their name inscribed on the trophy.

The 21st running of the race took place last Sunday in very mild conditions and all assembled were prepared to battle it out from the blast of Br Patricks starters whistle, two East Cork AC athletes and one from Riocht AC a club down in Castleisland  Co Kerry took the lead and after a very fast 1st lap one was to drop off the pace and by the second lap it was between Tim O’ Donoghue and James Doran of An Riocht as Sean McGrath had dropped back. From here on in it was a two man race and over the latter stages Tim O’ Donoghue stamped his authority on the race and on the final lap it was a certain that he would win which he did. James Doran was happy to claim second and Sean McGrath of East Cork held onto third place. It was nice to see that the prizes were spread out among different clubs and counties. Kenny Curran of Ballynonty AC Tipperary took the 0/40 prize, Ray Hahessy West Waterford AC claimed the 0/45 prize, Derek Nolan of Clonmel was happy to take the 0/50 prize and Con Kelleher of Waterford took the 0/60 prize. The first junior prize went to Liam Mulligan of KCK, well done to all.

CLEAR VICTORY FOR DYMPNA  RYAN IN LADIES RACE....The number of female runners in the West Waterford AC cross country race has been on the rise and this year saw the biggest entry for this race in many years. We were delighted to see Dympna Ryan of Dundrum AC in the field, an athlete of particular of note who has been to the fore all around the country recently in top road and cross country events. From the gun over the 2 lap ladies distance Dympna was to add yet another victory to her extending list of achievements as she lead all the way over the two laps despite the best efforts of our own  West Waterford’s Corinna Walsh who has won this race on previous occasions, finishing 2nd Corinna had a great run and she had work really hard over the last lap especially as the very fast finishing Waterford AC athlete Suzanne Dullaghan was closing in on her but Corinna held on for a great second place with Suzanne on this occasion having to settle for third place. Suzanne’s team-mate Joan Mahony won the over 35 prize and the remainder of prizes were won by West Waterford athletes. Well done to Brigid Coffey who won the 0/40 and to Onra Power who claimed the 0/45 prize. Lucy O’Brien had a great run to win the junior prize, well done to all.

RESULTS

Irish athletes look for funding for the Rio Olympics in 2016

As anyone who follows Irish athletics will know, funding for individual athletes is always an issue. Every year, the Irish Sports Council give out grants but only the very top international athletes like Rob Heffernan can hope to get the maximum amount. For younger up and coming athletes, their grants, if any, are a lot smaller and money is always an issue. They have the dilemma of trying to do the training required to reach an international standard and still be able to support themselves.

An interesting development on the Internet in the last year or two has been the use of sites like Kickstarter whereby people are asked to fund various business ideas and projects. The concept is called 'crowd sourcing'.

With those two facts in mind, some of Ireland's up and coming stars are now looking for funding for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Brother and sister Thomas and Jessie Barr from Waterford are top Irish hurdlers. Thomas put in some great performances in 2013 and came within five one-hundredths of a second of equaling the Irish 400m hurdles record. Jessie is the second fastest woman on the Irish all time list for the 400m hurdles.

This is their fundraising video...

This is the Barr's fundraising page.

Sarah Lavin from Limerick is just 19 years old and is already the 3rd fastest woman in the 100m hurdles on the Irish all time list.

From the organisers.....We had a great day today in Cashel for the first ever “Rock Run” in aid of St John the Baptist BNS school. The weather gods were definitely smiling on us as the sun shone brightly throughout the event. 175 participants registered for the run/walk and included adults and young people of all ages. This created a fantastic atmosphere from start to finish.

A word of thanks to all the participants who performed so well, and to everybody connected with the school who helped out so willingly both today and for the past month. A huge effort was put in to the making the run as professional as possible, and everybody can be very proud of their efforts.

The tent at the end created a lovely ambience as people could stay behind for refreshments while enjoying spectacular views of both Hore Abbey and the Rock of Cashel.

Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir. Hope to see you all next year le cúnamh Dé.

You can contact me at principal@cashelbns.ie if you have any queries/comments re: the race. Or if you have pictures! I’d love to get some pictures for our website as we didn’t take many!

Presentation to West Waterford Athletic Club...Wed 18th Sept 2013

Donal Power presents James Veale chairman of West Waterford athletic club with the James Hughes perpetual cup for cross country. Also pictured are Kevin and Michael Power. James Hughes was their grandfather and was an Irish international cross country athlete. Donal gave a very in depth talk on his grandfather in association with the Waterford Museum Society in the Town hall theatre Dungarvan on Wednesday evening. This was attended by members of the Museum society and local athletics enthusiasts. The cup will be awarded each year to the winner of the West Waterford AC open  cross country race which is celebrating its 21st year this year. The race goes ahead at St Augustine's College on October 6th at 2 pm where Waterford counties best cross country runners battle it out to make their own piece of history by being the first name inscribed on this magnificent trophy. Donal and members of  the Power family will be along on race day to present the cup to the race winner.

From Donal O'Donoghue....Donal Power had a Powerpoint presentation of 77 slides shown via overhead projector, to an audience of about 60 people.

This was a very interesting talk that covered James Hughes life from his early years on the family farm, and running locally for clubs in Co Louth.
There was no blog covering races back then, so the most reliable records of the era were the many newspaper clippings he kept in his scrapbook, along with a few photos.

Circa 1911 James Hughes moved to Surrey, working for the Pearl Life Assurance company for most of the next 37 years, and joined the local Surrey Athletic club.

In early 1915 he took a break from Pearl, and joined the Royal Munster Fusiliers of the British Army, and was sent back to Ireland to his training at Fermoy and Mitchelstown. He was in the trenches of the Western Front during the 1916 Easter Rising, where the opposing Germans raised banners taunting the Irish soldiers. He fought at the Battle of the Somme, and in particular the Battle of Guillemont, 3–6 September, where his athletic career was cut short, which his right leg was seriously injured by shrapnel, and what remained had to be amputated.

After the war he continued to work for Pearl, until his retirement in 1948. He had married a lady Mary Kehoe from Waterford, but had to continue to work in Surrey while the family grew up in Ireland. He retired to Abbeyside where he passed away in 1961, but kept active throughout his life, despite his severe injury.

Several Great War campaign medals and one surviving Athletic medal, which were left to Donal Power, were on display, along with the new Trophy, which will be presented annually at the West Waterford Cross Country race. This 21th running of this race will take place on Sunday 6th October at St. Augustine’s College.

An interesting side note in this lecture is that Cross Country was an Olympic event in the early years, until an incident in 1924 Paris Olympics. The race was won by Paavo Nurmi, the "Flying Finn".
This was the era before Hydration was taken seriously. In 40C heat, many runners failed to finish. Some who did collapsed. Many hours after the race, Olympic officials and French Red Cross were still out searching the course for lost runners! As a result the Olympic Committee decided to drop Cross Country from the Games, and it has never been reinstated since.
