Michael 'Curley' Cunningham ...RIP

Michael 'Curley' Cunningham RIP...

I was saddened to hear today that Mike Cunningham of Mooreabby Milers AC has passed away. Known to everyone as 'Curley', Mike was a regular on the racing scene and competed in races in Cork and all over Ireland.

I remember racing against Mike in a 50k race in Portumna a few years ago and I just couldn't match his pace as he finished first that day and I finished second. It was only after the race finished that I learned that he can taken part in a 10k race the evening before!

Mike was a quiet guy and was certainly one of the nicest people you could hope to meet on the race scene. Up to recently, he was involved in nearly everything...5k parkruns to mountain runs to marathons and ultras. I believe at one time he was part of an Irish masters team that took part in a mountain running competition in Slovenia / Italy.

There was a huge jump in numbers for the Kenmare Bridge Run this year with 185 people taking part. This is in contrast to the 97 of 2016. While the low numbers last year were due in part to the awful weather, a figure of 185 runners for a race in South Kerry is still pretty good.

Kerry...Results of the Ballybunion Half-Marathon & 10k...Sat 15th Apr 2017

There was a drop off again in numbers for this years Ballybunion Half-Marathon & 10k which was held on Easter Saturday the 15th of April 2017. In the half-marathon, there were just 92 finishers which is down 25% on last year. The 10k did much better getting 217 which is good for a race in North Kerry. It was down 7% on last year.

As you can see from the chart above and below, the numbers for this event have changed hugely over the years. At its peak in 2012, it was attracting 1064 runners. In 2017, that number has dropped to 309 which is also down 13% on last year.

As for why the huge drop? I have heard that the course is a bit hilly but other than that, I haven't heard anything bad about it. I'd guess that the main reason is that there are just too many races and this one just gets lost in the noise.

That gives a total of 220 finishers which is about the same as 2016. While the numbers are roughly equal, there were a lot fewer runners in each event which would have meant much bigger gaps between runners.

The is the profile for the first 13 miles...

The two highest points are around miles 4 and 9. This equates to miles 17 and 22 in the full marathon.

The profile is shown below. Note that the gradient is exaggerated somewhat. The first ascent is about 800ft / 250m.

The full and the half will finish in Kilfinane.

Ultra...The extra 10 miles of the Ultra are shown below. Runners will need to complete a 10 mile loop to the east of Kilfinane before starting off on the full marathon course.

Profile.......A pretty gradual climb of about 1000ft / 300m.
